Air Sealing

Stop Drafts, Save Energy, and Breathe Easier with Whole-Home Air Sealing

Air sealing services in Central Kentucky

Air sealing is one of the most effective — and often overlooked — ways to improve a home’s comfort, efficiency, and air quality. At 62 Insulation, we provide expert air sealing services for both existing homes and new construction, helping homeowners across Central Kentucky eliminate hidden leaks, reduce energy waste, and create a healthier indoor environment.

What Is Air Sealing?

Air sealing involves identifying and sealing gaps, cracks, and penetrations in a home’s building envelope — often found around plumbing, wiring, attics, crawl spaces, windows, doors, and HVAC openings. These leaks allow conditioned air to escape and outdoor air (often full of moisture, dust, and pollutants) to enter your home.

For Existing Homes

Older homes — and even many newer ones — often suffer from poor air sealing. This results in:

  • Drafty rooms
  • Hot or cold spots
  • High heating and cooling bills
  • Poor humidity control
  • Dust, allergens, and outdoor pollutants infiltrating your living space

Our Process:

  1. Home Energy Assessment – We identify major air leakage points using tools like blower door tests or thermal imaging, when needed.
  2. Targeted Air Sealing – We seal common leakage points in attics, crawl spaces, rim joists, around HVAC penetrations, and more.
  3. Optional Insulation Upgrades – Combine air sealing with insulation especially in attics or crawl spaces for the best performance.

For New Construction

Building a new home is the ideal time to get air sealing right — before drywall goes up. Proper air sealing during construction:

  • Reduces long-term energy costs
  • Improves HVAC efficiency
  • Prevents moisture intrusion and future mold issues
  • Meets or exceeds code requirements and energy certifications (HERS, ENERGY STAR®, etc.)

Our Approach
We work with builders and architects to seal all critical joints, penetrations, and framing gaps, using durable, code-approved materials like spray foam, caulk, and gaskets. We ensure the air barrier is continuous and effective throughout the entire building envelope.

Why It Matters

Whether you’re building new or upgrading your current home, air sealing has big benefits:

Lower Utility Bills – Reduces heating and cooling loss
More Consistent Temperatures – Eliminates hot/cold spots
Better Indoor Air Quality – Keeps out allergens, dust, and moisture
Improved Comfort – Say goodbye to drafts and uneven temps
Energy Code Compliance – Especially important in new builds or renovations

Frequently Asked Questions

A good time to add insulation to your attic is when you're experiencing high energy bills, uneven indoor temperatures, or noticing drafts — especially during extreme seasons like summer and winter. It's also ideal to upgrade during home renovations, roof replacements, or if your current insulation is old, damaged, or settling below recommended levels.

We recommend that our customers expect an attic overhaul to happen between 1-3 days, depending on the size and shape of the attic.

Cellulose and spray foam insulation, especially when paired with proper air sealing, can significantly reduce air leakage — but they won’t make a home too tight if installed correctly. A well-insulated home still needs controlled ventilation, which can be easily managed with systems like bath fans or energy recovery ventilators (ERVs). In fact, sealing a home properly helps improve comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality — as long as ventilation is part of the plan.
